Ever played a small or private gig — a wedding, a party — with no FoH engineer running the show? Ever wondered how to control lights and sound without falling back on "default" or "automated" settings?

I play drums with local bands, and it always frustrated me watching an FoH operator unfamiliar with our music lag behind on scene changes. A couple of years ago I noticed something: every cue actually lined up with a drum or percussion hit — a kick, a strike on my SPD-SX Pro. Each one could trigger a dedicated MIDI message, and by then the bands I play with had already switched to lighting and sound controllers that accepted MIDI input.

So I went looking for an app that could receive those MIDI triggers and respond with the right MIDI signals. A few existed, but they were all feature-limited and buried in cumbersome setup.

That's what started MIDIPerformer.

This app is built to set up as fast and easily as possible, while still supporting advanced features like signal ramps and delays for smooth lighting transitions. A private early version helped harden the MIDI communication and shape the feature set around real live situations. Since then, it's been reworked to handle whatever a show throws at it — a wrong or missed strike, a noisy Bluetooth environment, and more.

MIDIPerformer 1.1 gets you a working MIDI setup almost instantly, and into live performance mode with the day's playlist in three taps. Every scene change is meant to be MIDI-triggered — but dedicated gestures cover you when things go wrong. Not that professionals make mistakes. They just create live music.

I hope this small app inspires musicians, and anyone performing live, to build shows that are easier, more creative, and more fun.
